    A small luxury resort only thirty minutes by speed boat from Male Airport. A tiny slither of land surrounded on one side by one of the best dive sites in the Maldives and on the other by aquamarine shallows, Cocoa Island looks to be the ultimate desert island retreat. Luckily for the guests, appearances can be misleading and the levels of comfort, cuisine and service are about as far removed from Robinson Crusoe style living as it is possible to get. The standards and style of hospitality on this island are exquisite and on arrival, guests are greeted as honored visitors by the chef and his entourage in a charming ceremony that welcomes newcomers with the traditional coconut flower drink.
It is almost impossible to resist the temptation of taking one's shoes off to feel the softest sand before being shown to either a two bedroom villa, the Owner's Beach House or one of thirty-three dhoni-style thatched houseboats. Moored along planked walkways, these wonderful suites include elegant bedrooms that extend into spacious lounges with glass walls opening onto private verandas. From here it is no effort at all to slip into the warm waters lapping below and when salt water palls, to return up the steps and recline in the wooden whirlpool bath or pull back the glass-top coffee table to feed the rainbow-hued fish below.

Cocoa Island is located in the Maldive Islands, each a perfect smudge of white. Here, in the quiet waters of the Indian Ocean the strongest winds are gentle breezes, and the highest points, leaning palm fronts. Each lagoon is a point of stillness, but the encircling reefs bristle with life.

 Accommodation
  Rooms are inspired by dhoni boats, as used by local fishermen, adjoined by simple wooden walkways built above the shallow ocean. Each is its own discreet fiefdom. From your room, walk out on to a private terrace; from your terrace, slip into a warm Maldivian sea.
The view from the wide platform bed is directly out to the watery expanse. And the bathrooms, all with double sinks, a bath and shower, share the horizon views.

     These split-level bedrooms have king-sized or twin beds. The spacious living area leads onto a private sundeck with two chaise lounges, a dining table and direct access to the lagoon. The bathroom contains a single vanity unit with separate bathtub, shower stall and WC.

   Expansive living areas with vaulted ceilings are surrounded by full length glass windows on three sides. A staircase leads to the loft, fitted with a king-sized bed and ensuite WC.     At Cocoa Island, eat like a castaway - fresh lobster, caught locally, cooked in the Keralan style. Dine feet-in-the-sand at the main restaurant, Ufaa, beneath an alang-alang pavilion and huge Maldivian sky.
Menus change daily, blending Indian and Sri Lankan traditions with an emphasis on seafood, tandoor and organic, locally-sourced produce. Spicing is used with a lightness of touch. Choice is always tantalising, promising simplicity in the tropics, and sophistication for the more demanding gourmand. There is also a hotel bar, Faru, open from 10am until midnight, serving fine wines, exotic cocktails and energising juices. At Cocoa Island, we provide comprehensive room service menus, as well as a healthful COMO Shambhala cuisine.
 COMO Shambhala cuisine
   With COMO Shambhala cuisine, guests can benefit from a wide and changing variety of menus (breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as room service) which focus on nutritionally enriching and organic foodstuffs. The emphasis is on raw ingredients, which are more easily digested as well as richer in living enzymes, vitamins and sea minerals.
We don’t use cow’s milk, nor genetically tampered soy alternatives, but our own blended nut milks. We use honey instead of processed sugars. We also use sea vegetables high in nutrients, including magnesium and pumpkin seed ‘parmesan’ which replaces the flora found naturally in the intestine but is destroyed by cooking. Fish is an important feature on our menus - caught and brought straight to your plate. COMO Shambhala cuisine is not about deprivation; it’s for people who enjoy their food but want to feel good.
